Darron Gibson says Everton are capable of heaping semi-final misery on Liverpool
– just as he experienced in 2009.
The Republic of Ireland midfielder was part of the Manchester United team humbled
by the Blues in the last four three years ago.
And he told evertontv: “I knew coming here that Everton was a big club capable of
winning trophies and they obviously beat United in the semi-final the other year.
“I knew there was a good squad of players here and that we could do well – and we
have been – so hopefully we can go to the semi-final and pull off a good win.
“We are playing well and everyone is obviously looking forward to the semi. It is
another massive game. The fans are excited about it and so are we.
“We lost 3-0 the last time we played Liverpool so there will be a bit of pressure
on us, but if we stick to a gameplan and perform as well as we did against Sunderland
then we can get a result.”
Gibson, a January capture from Old Trafford, is yet to taste defeat as an Everton
player.
The 24-year-old has featured in nine games since his transfer – three of them ending
in draws and an impressive six in victory.
He is just happy to be on the pitch.
“Coming from not playing to playing every week I wasn’t really sure what to expect,”
Gibson added. “I didn’t know whether the manager would put me straight in, but luckily
he has and we’ve got good results. Hopefully once I’ve settled in there will be more
to come, and more goals.”
One man who has been among the goals is Nikica Jelavic.
The Croatian striker has three in five starts for his new Club, and Gibson said:
“He has settled in really well and taken his goals well, but I think you have to
give credit to the rest of the team as well as they are making chances for him which
maybe wasn’t happening earlier in the season.”
After the euphoria of beating Sunderland on Tuesday night in the FA cup Quarter final
replay it was a worry in some fans eyes that Everton would take their foot off the
pedal and lose the momentum. However, Everton didn't disappoint with a 2-0 victory
over a lacklustre West Brom.
Moyesy made three changes. Jags for Distin, Hibbo for Neville and Peanuts returned
in place of Mageye Gueye. Everton were quick out of the blocks and deserved their
lead after 20 minutes through Ossie. West Brom came into the game on the half hour
with a few half chances but Everton deserved their 1-0 half time lead.
Everton continued to dominate in the second half and got the reward their play deserved
when Pienaar set up substitute Anichebe to fire in the second goal of the post. Everton
could have increased their lead with chances from Jelavic, Pienaar and Gueye.
Tim Howard - Only really had one save to make late on in the first half from Scharner.
He'll be made up with his 3rd clean sheet in a week.
Tony Hibbert - Good in the tackle. Blocked the Shane Long goal ward bound shot. He
obliged the crowds shout of 'shoot', but the riot was avoided when his cross/shot
was deflected wide. The fans responded with 'He'll score when he wants..Oh Tony Hibbert..He'll
score when he wants.'
Phil Jagielka - Played well with Heitinga. Long was keen, but no match for the England
centre half.
Johnny Heitinga - Again looked assured and sound in the tackle. Read the game well.
Leighton Baines - Did well against the skilful Choi. Linked up well with Pienaar
down the left. Surprised he let Jelavic have a free kick.
Leon Osman - Had a good first half, but came off as a procausion with minor knock.
Scored after a great bit of skill that took him away from a defender and played a
one two with Jelavic. His shot got a deflection and went in. Unlucky with a header
early on.
Darron Gibson- Continues to impress. Strong in the tackle and his first thought is
to pass forward. Unlucky with a rasping drive fron the edge of the box which flew
inches over. God to see him moaning a others to close people down.
Maroune Fellaini - Another good game. Had a great effort saved by the keeper. Disappointed
with his moaning when he got a late tackle. Behaved like a big girl, which could
have resulted in a booking.
Steven Pienaar - Had a great game. Involved in all the good stuff played by Everton.
Will be disappointed he didn't score the 3rd after great play with Jelavic.
Tim Cahill - Not as influential as in midweek, but still putting himself about and
causing defenders problem. Unfortunate to be booked as Ridgewell feigned injury.
Nikica Jelavic - He looks like he's the centre forward we've been looking for for
yonks. Good in the air, leads the line and holds the ball up well. He scores too!
He even took a direct free kick instead of Bainesy.
Maggie Gueye - Looks like a top player who is now repaying Moyesy for the faith he's
showed in him. Earlier in the season he looked like a little boy lost.
Victor Anichebe - Took his goal well. If only he could play for 90 minutes like he
does when he comes on for 15 minutes. Only a great save from Foster stopped him scoring.
James McFadden - Only on for 10 minutes.
This was the third 2-0 on the bounce, the third clean sheet on the bounce and all
in the space of a week.
